What is Tui Na (Chinese Massage) therapy and how does it work?

Tui Na, aka, Chinese Massage Therapy has been used in China for over 2,000 years. It is also based on the traditional Chinese medical theory that the smooth flow of Qi through the meridians is crucial for one’s health.

Through the application of massage and manipulation techniques, Tui Na aims to establish a harmonious flow of Qi throughout the body energy channels, and allow the body to heal itself naturally.

Tui Na methods include the use of hand techniques to massage the soft tissues of the body, the use of acupressure techniques to directly affect the flow of Qi, and the manipulation techniques to realign the musculo-skeleton and ligaments.

Is Chinese massage safe?

The procedure is painless, safe and free from side effects. After treatment patient usually feels relaxed but energized. Tuina is not especially useful for those seeking a mild and sedating massage since it tends to be more task focused than other types of bodywork.

What diseases are treated with Chinese massage?

Examples of gynaecological conditions that Tui Na can help are: Infertility, PCOS, Endometriosis, Irregular Menstruation, Painful Menstruation, etc.

What happens during a Chinese massage session?

In a typical session, the patient, wearing loose clothing and no shoes, lies on a bed or sits on a chair. The practitioner examines the specific problems of the patient and begins to apply a specific treatment technique. The major focus of application is upon specific pain sites, acupressure points, energy meridians, muscles, and joints.

External herbal liniments, salves, poultices, and compresses may also be used to enhance the therapeutic effects. The treatment is often used in conjunction with acupuncture and/or cupping to maximize the therapeutic effect.

A session lasts from 45 to 60 minutes.

What is cupping treatment and how does it work?

Cupping is the modern term for another type of traditional Chinese medical treatment. A glass, bamboo, ceramic or metal jar is applied to the skin and the pressure in the cup is reduced by briefly heating or suctioning out air.

Because of the low pressure inside the jar the skin and superficial muscle layer is drawn into and held in it. Cupping creates a series of blood-infused raised sections on a patient’s skin. It is believed that this generates a negative energy flow which can work against the patient’s current state of stagnation.

It also works by promoting blood circulation and Qi flow, activating the lymphatic system, and thus alleviating swelling and pain. Cupping is the best deep tissue massage available.

What diseases are treated with cupping?

Examples of gynaecological conditions that cupping can help are: Infertility, PCOS, Endometriosis, Irregular Menstruation, Painful Menstruation and Vaginal Discharges, etc. It also helps with male infertility.

Is cupping treatment safe?

The procedure is painless, safe and free from side effects. During a cupping treatment, the patient experiences a mild pulling sensation which calms the sympathetic nerves and allows a deep relaxation to move through the whole body. The cup is generally left for several minutes.

The skin becomes reddened due to the congestion of blood flow. The redness will go away within an hour. Occasionally a bruise along the site of the rim of the cup can remain for up to a week (depending on the extent of blood stagnation present).
